Whitehack Capeshit Soloplay: Mutants in the City

Part 1

In Metro City, a figure stands on top of the 2nd tallest skyscraper the city has. He looks up towards his target, the tallest: Harp Tower. His earpiece buzzes, hidden by a fox mask.

Overseer: Preliminary scouting didn’t produce much fruit, Fox. You’re going in blind. Fox: What’s new? How do I get into the lab? Overseer: We… don’t know. It’s below Harp tower. I’m sure you’ll figure it out. Just go down. Fox: If you say so. I’m cutting comms here. See you when I come collect.

The Fox pulls his ear piece and tosses it to the side. He checks his dual pistols, a practice he’s done 100 times before. Once he’s satisfied, he approaches the edge. Then, he falls.

This short solo-play takes place in a world where mutants, those born with great powers, are hidden just out of the public’s eye. Some of them want to keep it that way: they are The Quiet. Others, believing that they can leverage their abilities for power over the rest of society, want to make their presence known, just as soon as they’re prepared to take their rightful place first. They are called The Loud.

Fox – Level 4 Deft Mutant Assassin

Str 10, Agi 16, Tgh 12(Mutant), Int 13(Hacking Corps), Wil 10, Cha 7(Mutant)
HP 11, AV 12, SV 10, DF 3
Attuned: (Dual Pistols(d6)), Fox Mask ; (Flesh), Soft Shoes
Grapple hook, 2 knives (d6-1), Hacking device
Power: Fox is effectively immortal, due to extreme regeneration. Upon hitting 0, instead of the normal dying rules in Whitehack, he loses a random limb or his head. He regenerates at a rate of 2hp per round, and has to fully regenerate 6 points to regenerate entire limbs back. His head is different; upon losing his head he is incapacitated for at least 10 minutes.

Despite the time, the streets are alive with rage. Protests against Harp Corp’s new technological breakthrough, fully autonomous clones, have been raging for weeks after it has become known to the public. Armed security guards the doors, armed with rifles; the government has given them company a ‘pass’ on how they run their security in these times.

Fox is probably mixed into the crowd somewhere, running down his options.

  1. He could go in guns blazing. He’d find it fun, but probably wouldn’t get very far.
  2. He could look for a secondary entrance somewhere.
  3. He could attempt to pass as a guard and gain entry.

Fox is fairly experienced, so I think he goes with #2. I’ll give him an Int(13) roll to find a good secondary entrance with the tools at his disposal. He gets a positive double roll (WH’s word for advantage) due to being a deft and having the vocational group of assassin.

Unfortunately, he rolls a 17 and an 18: both well above his Int score of 13. This building only has two entrances: the loading bay in the back and the main doors, both of which are guarded. He thinks that his best option is dealing with the guards on the loading bay, which has less eyes and is naturally darker.

There are two guards, placed on both sides of the loading bay. Due to the protests, they are armed and armored. I’ll say their stats look like this:

Guard: HD 1, DF 5, AV 11 (Rifle: d6+1), SV 6

Fox can potentially get the drop on one and kill them without alerting the other, but he’ll have to do the following:

  1. Succeed an agility stealth roll.
  2. Kill the guard with a roll of high quality. WH suggests that the quality of a roll is based on how high it is while still succeeding. For this, I think Fox needs a roll of 10 or higher to reach the needed quality.

First, he rolls his stealth. I think Sneaking up on somebody with the intention of killing them is a pretty assassin thing to do, so he’ll get a double roll.

He rolls: 13 and 11, both well under his agility of 16.

Fox moves through the shadows as if they were a part of him. He makes not a sound, not even as he slides his knife from its sheath on the back of his waistband.

Now comes the risky part, the attack roll. WH uses a different sort of advantage with combat, called the combat advantage. It’s a +2 to AV and Damage. It can also stack. I think in this case, where Fox is completely undetected, he’ll get double combat advantage. As a Deft, he also has the option of trading one of these advantage rolls in for double damage. It’s tempting, but with the conditions he needs to succeed in killing this guard stealthily, he’s better off keeping both combat advantages for +4 AV and +4 damage.

Fox needs a 16 or below to hit. If he does so, his knife does D6-1 damage. With combat advantage, this comes out to d6+3. I’ll go ahead and roll the guard’s hp now: 6, the highest roll he can get. Unfortunate.

Fox rolls for his attack: 15! If this damage roll turns out well, he’ll succeed in a stealth kill. He needs a 3 or higher on his damage roll to kill.

Nope, rolled a 1. He only does a total of 4 damage.

The Guardsman screams as a blade rips down into his chest. It sticks out of the neck hole of his armor. His compatriot turns, bringing up his rifle, and notices the cloaked figure attacking his ally.

Fox: Fuck.

Combat: Fox vs Guards

Well, there’s really no avoiding a fight now. In WH, everyone rolls a d6 modified by a high agility, with the highest number going first. I’m going to group the guards together for ease. Fox has an agility of 16, so he gets a +2 to his roll. The order is: Fox: 7 Guards: 5

Round 1

Fox draws his pistols and makes an attack roll. He’s spotted, but because he moved first, I don’t think the guard in front of him has much of a chance to ready himself, so he’ll get combat advantage. He’ll also choose to Fight Offensively, giving him +1 AV and damage, but -2 DF and -1 SV to special attacks until his next turn.

Fox rolls a 4, hitting armor. Shit.

The guards both get an attack. Either fortunately or unfortunately for Fox, I think he’s considered in melee with Guard A. Guard A turns and shoots his rifle. For simplicity sake, we’re not doing rules for automatic weapons or anything like that here.

Guard A rolls 12, just above his AV. If that was 1 less, it would crit…

Guard B rolls a 15, also missing. It was a lucky round.

Round 2

Gunshots ring out through the quiet back alleyway. At the protest, people begin to quiet. The guards at the front door look amongst themselves. What’s happening?

This isn’t a quiet affair. I’m going to start a d4 timer for how long it takes for backup to arrive. I’ll keep that hidden, for suspense sake.

Fox really needs to kill this guy now, but he absolutely doesn’t have combat advantage. He also doesn’t want to invoke his Deft attunement on his pistols yet. He’ll continue fighting offensively. I imagine that Fox does some really intricate gun-fu in a melee scenario.

He rolls a 12! That makes it a critical, since his (base)AV is 12. Unfortunately, This guy is guaranteed to die, due to the bonus from Fighting Offensively. A bullet cracks through his riot mask, ripping his brain into shreds.

The other guard gets his attack: That’s gonna be a 10. His rifle does d6+1 damage: only 2. Unfortunately for him, Fox regenerates 2 HP a round, making that damage meaningless after his next turn. Speaking of which…

Round 3

Backups haven’t arrived just yet. Fox regenerates the little bit he’s lost from that last graze. It’s probably too subtle for the guard to notice…

Fox keeps up with his plan. He rolls a 6, which hits, and does… wait, let me roll for Guard B’s HP. It’s 3.

Fox rolls his d6+1: 3, killing the guard in one blow. Lucky…

Round 4

Both his foes are dead, but Fox has to think quick: backup is coming in 1 more round. He can’t clean the bodies up in time, so he just has to figure it out once he gets inside. He picks up a key to the auxiliary door and dashes into the building, hoping that whatever happens works out…

End of Part 1

That was a fun little session. I spent way too much time prepping for this soloplay, considering that it’s just another experiment. Once I got past prep, actually playing the game was pretty fun! I wasn’t timing myself, but I think what I got here constituted about half an hour of solid play. I don’t know if I’m going to publish this once I’m done, or if I’m going to play some more and then publish it all as one big post. If I did post it alone and you’re reading this, let me know whether or not the formatting works. Cheers!
